S2E4 - Kaley Hatfield: Changing Your Perspective

Show Notes and Resources

Alex and Kaley met on a blind friend date!

Kaley is a professional dancer and health and wellness coach. Health is not just fitness. Health is mind, body, soul - a holistic approach! You can’t fix just one thing and expect a change. You have to prioritize yourself and where you want to be and commit to yourself every single day.

She offers virtual and in person sessions with clients. Likes to get to the root of the matter with clients before starting any kind of routine, to find out what people are truly motivated by.

She was a dancer from the age of 6 years old. Mom passed away, but was her number 1 supporter with dance.

A few years later, her Dad marries her dance teacher and they end up taking over and running the dance studio. Dance was life.

She had professional dance aspirations, but had a lot of stressors from a young age to do with never feeling good enough. She felt like she could never meet the standards of others, especially her stepmom. She was under a lot of pressure and didn’t have a great perception of herself.

Moved to LA and lost a lot of confidence in herself. She felt her body didn’t look great anymore. She was no longer in a consistent routine or schedule with dance and it was showing in her body.

She finally convinced herself to go to the gym in her apartment complex. It took her a long time to actually go do it. She was scared and intimidated by it at first. Finally she just went down and googled what types of exercises to try doing.

She realized her mind was hindering her when it came to doing anything other than dancing. Dance was all she had known and was all she allowed herself to do. Her thoughts and perspectives had deterred her from trying something new. If she had never gone down to that gym, she would have missed out on an untapped passion.

Changing her mindset allowed her to change so many things in her life. She realized that if she could do this for herself, then she could help others do the same thing.

Alex was very intimidated by Kaley when she first saw her Instagram and her website. Her body is perfection and she’s gorgeous and is doing so many amazing things. It wasn’t until talking to Kaley in person that Alex realized how down to earth Kaley is and that she really is promoting the things that Alex so values. Kaley calls herself a health and wellness coach because it’s true. She is so much more than just a personal trainer! Kaley helps her clients go deep within in order to make the long lasting changes to get where they want to go and become who they want to be.

In therapy Kaley has unpacked a lot of the trauma she went through during her childhood and upbringing. She learned that her subconscious mind blacked out a lot of the things she went through.

From some unresolved trauma she learned that she really has trouble making decisions for herself. She was constantly judged for her appearance and her choices and it caused her to acquiesce to what others deemed as “right.” She allowed all of her decisions to be made for her while growing up.

She also dealt with never feeling like she was good enough because of the judgments of others, so she ended up holding herself to unrealistic expectations. She would only point out what more she could have done or how she could’ve been better instead of being happy with what she accomplished. She was conditioned to be her own harshest critic.

The shift to feeling confident in herself happened when she decided to put herself first. Growing up she was just trying to appease other people - her stepmom, the judges at competitions, her teachers. . . She decided it’s time to do things just for her. Her perspective switched. She kept the goal of wanting to be a professional dancer, but started caring less about what others thought of her and just danced for herself because she loved it.

Now she helps her clients that she coaches do this same thing. The goal doesn’t change, but the perspective for why they’re doing it changes.

With her clients Kaley will ask about their struggles and why they want to get in shape. Generally, people will have surface level reasons for wanting to change their body. They want to lose weight to fit into certain clothes or look good for a wedding etc. etc. The idea is that we only look good for other people and that’s a societally accepted answer.

Lifestyle changes are for the long game. No one wants to be fit and cute for a short amount of time, we want it for life! But in order to do that, it takes going deeper.

Kaley helps her clients go deeper and figure out why they want to make lifestyle changes - what is the root cause? After unearthing the real reason for wanting change, it is up to the client to make the decision to continually choose themself in working towards these lifestyle changes and goals that are motivated from a deep intrinsic place.

Kaley helps her clients set not only fitness and diet goals, but also mindset goals.

Having an accountability buddy is a major component of how to stay committed to making long lasting changes. Kaley can be that accountability person for you as a coach!

We want to be able to do things on our own, but it’s okay to admit that we need help.  Make yourself a priority, how willing are you willing to make it happen for yourself. . . it might involve asking for help!

Also having your deeper “why” to hold on to when it’s hard to keep going is a great motivator.

It’s all about perspective.
